renting a car to drive to Provence

We will be in Nice for 3 days, and then 2 days to see Provence on the way to Paris. Would you recommend renting a car, and returning to Nice for a flight, or renting one way to Paris? Cost is definitely a big consideration but so is ease and most important, fun! Thanks

I rented a are in Avignon and ultimately drove it to Paris. But I was stopping off in between. You might consider renting the car and dropping it off in Avignon and taking the TGV train.

I think the drive to Paris could be fun, if you like to drive, have a few extra days, and have some interesting stops planned along the way. Otherwise, take the train.

I'm not sure I understand the returning-to-Nice scenario, but in the time it would take you to do that from Provence, you could be in Paris by train.

We were in Arles and had to take a bus that was under an hour to get to Avignon. From there we took the TGV train to Paris. Very easy to get around. Check out the schedules that you will find on www.bahn.de. It will show the best way to get from Arles - Paris for the time you want to travel in.

If you decide to stay in Avignon, check the Holiday Inn Express near the TGV station. In fall of 2007 it was VERY inexpensive. It has a very full breakfast and large, modern rooms. It is walking distance from the TGV station and the bus stop to take you into downtown Avignon.
