Renting a car to drive in Portugal

Hello, all. In Rick Steves's Portugal 2007 guidebook, he recommends renting a car from the US. Has anyone had any experience using Expedia or Orbitz to rent a car? It seems significantly cheaper to use the Expedia and Orbitz services (they quote around $350 for an automatic for 4 days from Advantage rental). I've checked Auto Europe and Europe by Car, and the same rental conditions turn up prices of around $650. Anyone have any idea what's causing the huge difference in prices?

autoeurope is a great rental company. They will
match other offers. They have great 3rd party
insurance which your cc will not cover. Do
you really neet an automatic? Manual is much
cheaper.

Last Oct I used www.autoeurope.com. It cost about $35 a day for a manual economy , no a/c. unlimited miles. I also like Avis in europe.

Most European car rental outlets stock a majority of stick shift cars. Automatics tend to come in on the more up market cars. The difference is probably due to the fact that some companies will have an automatic car in the more affordable price bands.
