We will be in Paris for a week and then traveling to Switzerland. I would like to rent a car at the end of the first week at some location that would be easy to navigate as we leave the city and head southeast. After a few days in Switzerland, we are returning to France, visiting several towns and flying out of CDG. We need to return the car to this same location and are thinking of staying the last night somewhere near the airport to make the morning of the flight easier. So, where do we rent the car so we can then get a train to the airport? Am I making this too complicated?
This is how I've managed that situation: Look at the rail map of the line you'll take to Switzerland, find the stops along it that look big enough to have a rental car counter in the train station, and then use the Auto Europe/Hertz/etc websites to find cars. I'd suggest returning the car right to CDG; I've never had to pay a drop off fee as long as I rented the car in France. Then you don't have to hassle with the train back to the airport.
You'll need to buy a toll sticker for driving in Switzerland: http://www.autobahnen.ch/index.php?lg=001&page=014
Thank you for the helpful advice. I didn't realize there was no drop-off charge at CDG so that's probably what we'll do.
We rented a car at Disneyland Paris last summer (Marne la Vallee is the name of the town.) it is really easy to get to and from, large well-marked roads, easy pickup/drop off location. It's east of Paris, so on your way. Very easy RER connection from anywhere in Paris. I'd recommend it over the airport - less congested.
