Hi all!
Taking a 2 week trip to Italy. Flying into Rome, three nights there, then ending up for a week in Buonvonvento (Siena) at an agriturismo.
Question is where to pick up the car. I found a car rental at Perugia airport, but it would be great to be able to take the train, get off, and be right near the car rental place.
Any towns with car rentals right at the station? I'm hoping to be able to pick up and drop off in different places, as an option.
Thanks in advance!
Pickup a Hertz car rental across the street from the Orvieto train station. It's a very popular pickup/drop off location. You can take a local train from Rome Termini in 70 minutes.
The roads up to Siena are controlled access and/or 4 lanes all the way.
Thanks David. Do you mean you don't recommend driving from Orvieto up to Siena area? Anything particularly difficult about it?
David means the opposite: the road from Orvieto to Siena is easy!
In Siena and other towns, do stay out of 'ZTL' restricted-traffic areas. Signage is usually obvious, but there is no room for error as traffic violations are enforced by camera and the fines are in the 150€ ballpark.
We picked up a car at Perugia train station on our way to Assisi. I believe it was through Europcar or Hertz. It was very easy! However, the suggestion to pick up the car in Orvieto makes more sense given your destination.
It's a breeze driving up to Siena from Orvieto and Umbria. The only problem is finding a parking spot in Siena. It's a very congested city with apartments and housing down low and the city center up on a hill.
Chiusi is also an option. There are several car rental iPhones there and, at least when we last rented, AutoEurope works with at least one agency (Europcar) there.
The traffic is lighter from there than Perugia.
Orvieto is a good location to rent a car. When we did a similar trip we rented in Rome and drove to Chuisi as a base. Chose a rental location at the edge of Rome and drove out easily.
The highway is fast and quick. However, I dislike paying tolls, so we drove the non toll road. Easy to drive, but it takes longer. We also stopped at San Giminango (spelling) on the way.
Watch for the traffic control zones.
Any place that works for you will be a good place to rent.
