I was hoping to rent a car in Spain (Madrid) and drop it off in Italy (Venice). Any suggestions on companies to rent a car from that don't have the outrageous drop off fee that goes along with dropping the car off in another country than that which I rented it.

I am running into Spain's outrageous rental car drop fee also. I have not had one way rental issues elsewhere (Germany-Switzerland or Milan-Rome), in that the drop fee is usually about $100. I am trying to rent from Madrid and drop in Avignon France and I am getting $500 drop fee. I have been told its a "spain thing". You might want to look into perhaps dropping at the france side of the spanish order, perhaps in Perpignan, taking a train to Figueres and picking up another rental there where you can drop in your final city in spain. You'd have to figure out the costs, time and all. It seems like it may be alot of hassle and I am not sure how much I will really save. I am debating whether I should bite the bullet and pay the $500 drop fee currently.

Thanks Matt. Yes, the fee to drop the car in Italy after renting in Spain is 2K which is outrageous. We have just decided to drop the car in Spain and fly to Venice. Would rather drive through the country, but not at that price.
