renting a car in Europe

If I rent a car at the Munich airport, is it possible to return it to the Zurich airport, which will be closer to my last destination of Hinterzarten in the Black Forest? Also, do I reserve from here in the states or wait till we arrive?
Thanks.

Steve's right--drop it in Munich or Ausgburg and take the train to Zurich and save a bundle.

If you do look to drop the car in Germany, check Freiburg and Stuttgart. They may be closer. You can get the train to Zurich. Pam

Remember - picking the car up at the airport or the main train is going to cost you about 20% more in taxes. If possible, pick the car up at the rental agency in downtown Munich to avoid the additional fee.

I would go ahead and make a reservation. Rental car companies have pared down their inventory, so they don't have as many "extra" cars waiting around. If you wait until you get there, you don't really have the chance to shop around for the best rate, and you'll be stuck with whatever's left in the lot. If you reserve an economy car and there's only larger cars there, you'll get the larger car for the economy rate. Do your shopping on the internet now.
