Hello. I am traveling to Ireland this fall with two of my girlfriends. We are planning on renting a car. What is the best route to do this? Should I go through a travel agency (we have a very limited selection in our town) or book through someplace like Expedia? Also, I would like the most coverage I can get. I know there is CDW – is that something I get while booking? Is there more coverage I can get when I pick up the car? Is it needed? We will also need an automatic transmission as none of us know how to drive a manual. I have heard horror stories of people who book automatic but when they pick up there is only manual left. Finally, can I get the Complete Road Atlas of Ireland at the Dublin Airport? Thanks for your help!!
Emily-You might try Auto Europe. At the time of rental you can purchase Super CDW, this will bring the deductible down to 0 in the event of any accident. I'm sure you are aware that renting a car with automatic transmission will be more expensive. Also check out ViaMichelin we used this site quie a bit to plan our travels in Ireland this past June.
You can check prices online for AutoEurope and Kemwell. You can also call Gemut. These companies are brokers for rental car agencies such as Avis, Hertz, Europcar, etc. I like to purchase my maps before my trip enabling me to plan my routes and familiarize myself, again, with street signs. I purchase them at Barnes and Noble, or they sell them on this website under the Travel Store. I'm sure you're aware you will driving on the other side of the car, on the other side of the street. Roundabouts, or traffic circles, can be interesting. Have a great trip!
