Renting a car between Munich (Germany) or Reutte (Austria) to Vienna (Austria)

Hello! My husband and I want to rent a car and drive from Munich to Vienna. We want to leave the car in Vienna, and plan to take the train back to Munich. We were planning to drive from Munich (Germany) to Reutte (Austria) to Salzburg to Hallstat to Vienna (all Austria). We're having trouble with the one-way rental from Germany to Austria. Reutte does not appear to have rental car facilities and the closest one is Fussen (Germany), which defeats the purpose for me. I thought about taking a train from Munich to Innsbruck (a larger city in Austria), but the cost savings do not seem worth it.

I understand there is an international drop-off fee involved, and curious if anyone has better ideas for our trip? Ideas appreciated!

I would take the train from Munich to the Innsbruck airport where you'll be able to rent a car without the several hundred dollar drop off fee. Weigh the fact that the drop off fee could be €400 and the train fare for 2 would be about €80 and you'd save about €24 in fuel costs.

Or you could take the train to Salzburg and rent the car there

If you do decide to drive to Salzburg (bear in mind the heavy tolls in addition to the Vignette at several Austrian tunnels and private roads) you can save money by parking under the mountain (Altstadt A or Aldstadt B car parks) and getting your ticket punched in the Altstadt at one of several merchants. You will have very inexpensive 4 or 6 hour visits (€4 or €6 versus the €15 park and ride charge).

Have some bread from the monastery.

Thank you all for the replies. I don't think renting a car in Salzburg is feasible (we are headed to Reutte after Munich, and that's more backtracking than I like). I think renting a car in Innsbruck may work, but when I searched, the cost was more expensive (I think because of the smaller size of the town?)

Not knowing from where you are getting prices, you might want to check with AutoEurope. A one week rental for a compact car runs about $300 for a week in mid August.

We are renting a car this fall from Vienna to Karlsruhe. Using Auto Europe we compared the fees using their website. What we found is that each car rental charges different drop off fees. We found Hertz had the lowest drop off fee. So Hertz looks more expensive on the cost comparison chart but ended up being cheaper because of drop off fees. The car rental fees are like buying airline tickets. The prices are constantly changing! Ugh!
