We are going to be renting a car in Germany (Heidelberg) for 7 days and wanted to know if anyone has any advice from experiences good and bad with rental agencies in Germany (Sixt, Autoeurope, Avis, Europecar, etc).
I've had about the service you expect from Avis and Europecar. One very positive experience with Sixt, and one negative- sort of like the Seinfeld sketch where the car he reserved wasn't available.
Heidelberg only has smaller rental offices which means the selection of cars there is limited (compared to Frankfurt or Munich). The consequence might be: You're getting a free upgrade if your size car isn't available or: You don't get any car the kind you like. Especially if you prefer automatic transmission that might limit your choice significantly. Than everybody wants Diesel with automatic for the much better milage. You might not be able to end up with such a combination... If your car is not available in Heidelberg (no matter if from ??? or ??? or any of the other rental agencies) do ask if it's available in nearby Mannheim, a short train ride away but with a tad more choice - a tad only though... Andreas reminded me of a good point. If you want automatic transmission, reserve ASAP, especially if you're renting from a smaller regional office.
