rental car munich

Driving into Munich and spending 3 days, may do trip to Dachau or Berchtesgaden Do you think its worthwile to hold on to rental car for 3 days (160E) or use
public transport . Flying out of Munich this is last stop on trip.

Ditch the car. The only exception might be is if you're absolutley definitely for sure going to Berchtesgaden. The car might be a tad faster than public transportation, but it's about three hours each way no matter how you do it. For two people, car vs early-bought train tickets is close to a wash, but the car loses when you toss in parking. Last-minte tickets nudge the car ahead again. The only sure win for the car is to catch Berchtesgaden prior to Munich. All the logic above goes to pot immediately unless you make the trip the day after you get to Munich and get rid of the car that evening. Munich to Dachau by car is so stupid it's not even worth thinking about. As implied, add parking costs when you noodle on the comparative expenses.

Ed, Would the car be a bonus returning to airport ? Obviously if you take public transport to airport it would be cheaper. But I failed to mention
this is a party of 4.

The devil's in the friggin details, huh? It's a luggage question and how much you want to pay for it. Bus tickets are about ten euro each. It's twenty-five miles out there, so each taxi will be in the area of fifty bucks. I can't see how a car, just for this, would be worth it. Driving in Munich isn't miserable, but it's not a bunch of grins either. What you've done is screw up my Berchtesgaden dope. I can glance at a map and guess driving cost within a couple of bucks - - gas will stiff you forty dollars out and back. I'm severly train-stupid. All I know how to do is walk up and buy a ticket and hop on. I don't plan so I've never bought an advance ticket in my life. I'm asware that advance tickets for two come real close to using a cheap car, maybe beat the car price with the expensive one you have, beat if for sure when you factor in parking. Four walk-up tickets are going to put the car back in the lead again by a long shot - - I think. One of the train nuts is going to come along, spot this, slap me aside the head, and give you a price down to the half-nickle. Wait for them.

Hi Jeff, The only sensible thing is to drive to Berchtesgaden and stay a day and night before heading to Munich. Drive to Munich, it's only a 2 hour drive, drop the car. Simple. Actually, you could also visit "Mad" King Ludwig's Herrenchiemsee palace on the drive between Berchtesgaden and Munich. Paul

"Would the car be a bonus returning to airport ? Obviously if you take public transport to airport it would be cheaper. But I failed to mention this is a party of 4." Would the car be a bonus returning to the airport? No. A Gesamtnetz Partner Tageskarte is for up to five people for unlimited travel on all conveyance in the entire MVV network for an entire day and costs 20,40€ (an extra day of car rental will probably cost more than 20,40€). The Tageskarte will take you from close to wherever you are staying in Munich to the S-Bahn station between the terminals at the airport. No hassle getting out of Munich. No need to take time returning a car. You will undoubtedly be staying in the inner zone (Innenraum) of Munich. A München XXL Partner Tageskarte, for 13,60€, will cover you from wherever you are staying to the Hauptbahnhof and from there by S-Bahn to the Dachau Bahnhof and then on the bus to the Memorial and return. The trip from the Hauptbahnhof to Dachau Memorial take 39 minutes. And once you get back to the inner zone, it will still be good for all your transit for sightseeing the rest of the day.

Not sure what you mean. If you are staying in Berchtesgaden and only taking the bus around to sights like the Eagles Nest and Königssee, you will probably find that local point-point bus tickes cost less than a pass. However, for 9,50€/adult (sorry, forgot thet increase the pass), you can get an RVO TagesTicket, which is an all day pass good for most buses in the Berchtesgaden area. It would also cover round trip to/from Salzburg on the Watzmann Express, RVO bus 840, which make a trip 45 min into Salzburg every hour. To go from Berchtesgaden to Munich, you can use a Bayern-Ticket for 22€ for the first person, 4€ more for each additional person up to 5, total (34€ for four people). The Bayern-Ticket allows you to ride any regional train all day (after 9 AM workdays). Your whole party could go from Berchtesgaden to Munich and include a stop in Prien to go out to the island palace at Herrenchiemsee. Once you get to Munich, the Bayern-Ticket is also good for all conveyances in the Munich metro area for the rest of the day.

Ok thanks all , I think it comes down to a matter of cnovenience. It will be about 70 euro a day for the car (parking fees at hotel in Munich included) We are about getting where we need to go on the fly without buses and trains. I think with that being said its a crap shoot as to whether to leave the car when arriving Munich. Especially if its 50 euro to the Airport for 4 people
plus luggage and the trip to Eagle's nest. Thanks all.

It's only about 20€ (not 50€) to the airport with the S-Bahn and you don't have to worry about dropping off a car and getting from there to the terminal. As for the Eagles Nest, you can't drive a car up to the Nest. It's a private road, only open to the special buses (however, you can hike up). There are parking lots at the base of the mountain, but you can easily take the bus out from the Berchtesgaden Hbf.
