I will be renting a car for Spain from the US. My insurance company will not cover the car. I can get collision coverage for the car elsewhere but don't know how to get liability coverage. What is a good way to get liability coverage? How much is necessary? Are some rental companies better on insurance than others? Thanks.
Liability is required by law and included in the cost of the rental, no matter what company you use.
We purchased ours through Travel Guard (website). It was about $9/day, but in the end we found out the rental car company would have charged us about the same amount. You will just have to check to see which is a better deal.
If you are an American Express card holder, you can purchase rental car insurance from them for between $18 and $25 (depends on what state you live in ???!). It's good for 42 consecutive days.

She's right, I found that they were about the same cost but the deductible for Travel Guard was way lower than the rental car agency, so a better deal. Be sure to compare carefully.
With regard specifically to liability coverage (coverage for injury or damage to persons or property outside the vehicle), Nancy from Bloomington's original answer is correct. The other companies mentioned sell other available coverages.
We always take the insurance for full coverage through American Express. You never know when you may need it and you definitely are not expecting to have to use it but we once had to use it for a fender bender in Rothenburg-saved us $1,300.
