I've heard having a car in Rome can be problematic. Where would one leave a car while visiting in Rome for 2 days? I'm worried about Vernazza too. Thanks for any suggestions.
You don't want to drive in Rome, period. Drop it off outside the city and pick up another car when you leave (so you don't pay for two days of rental).
Depends on what's on either side of your 2 days in Rome. A preferred option mentioned in Rick's book and on this site is to leave the car at the parking lot behind the train station in Orvieto (about a hour north of Rome).
I don't know about Vernazza, but under no circumstances do you want to be driving in Rome.
Hmmm...Rome and Vernazza...I don't suppose that Florence and Venice are on your itinerary as well? My point is that nearly all cities of any size are problems for cars, whether it is traffic, parking costs, security, or the dreaded restricted zones. Maybe review your car use and see if it can be restricted to fewer days in select areas.
Thanks for the replys. We are still trying to figure the car thing out vs the train. We fly into Frankfurt and were planning on getting a car and kicking around in Germany, Austria and Croatia before meeting up with family in Italy. We thought it would be easier to see and stay in the smaller towns if we had a car.
Rental cars to see Italian cities is not the easy option it is in the US. Rental car makes sense in Tuscany Hill Towns, that's about it.
Patty - I agree with Kent... unless you're in Tuscany rental cars are usually "burdensome" parking is a nightmare, and gas is 1.53 Euros per liter today... that's a little more than $9.00 a gallon. Train tickets are starting to sound better!!!
