I want to rent a car at the Lisbon airport, cross the border into Spain for three days and return to Lisbon. Do the rental agencies allow this and do I have to let them know that I'm taking the car out of the country? Are there border checkpoints btw Portugal and Spain?

You will have to check with the agency you are using, but I did the reverse last year without a problem. However, there are certain companies that will not allow you to take cars to certain countries. I used Budget, so I called them and they read me the list of restricted countries.

Thanks! We found a car thru AutoEurope and are getting a green card - the roads look great.

One small thing to be aware of when you cross the border between Spain & Portugal is that the two countries are in different time zones, with a one-hour difference between them. Portugal is in the same time zone as the UK, Spain is not. When it's 2 PM in Portugal, it's 3 PM in Spain.

Whoa.... I didn't think about that!! We have plane ressies out of Lisbon so that actually helps when getting back in Thursday but make us later getting to Caceres on the day we rent the car!! Thanks - great info...
