Hi! Will be driving from Seville to Madrid with 4 people. My husband & I will have your standard backpacking backpack, while the other two will most likely have a standard carry-on suitcase each. Does anyone know if we can handle fitting all of this into an "economy car" such as the Volkswagen Polo, for example. Thank you so very much!! :)
I would say - perhaps but barely. Also people are of different sizes. Four average American people could have hard time. I personally would go for a bigger car to be able to enjoy travel instead of feeling like a masochist.
Laughing for real at your last comment. I would like to keep my marriage intact so I think you're right as far as the next size up goes. HAHA! Thank you so much for the insight!!
Last time we traveled with 4 adults in Europe, we had a Opel station wagon. We each had a 22' rolling bag, and the car barely handled our stuff. It was considered a mid size vehicle.
Your passengers probably would appreciate a larger vehicle than "economy" class cars.
A Polo might be uncomfortable for adults in the back seat even without luggage. A compact is ok for short trips, but you'd need to have some bags in laps. An intermediate wagon, like David mentions, would be more reasonable.
One of the problems with an economy car is the back seat leg room. How long are the passengers' legs? How far forward can the front seat (driver and passenger) position their seats?
Isn't the train about 2.5 hours between these 2 destinations? Is that the only reason to rent a car...that short jaunt? If so it's not NEARLY worth the trouble and hassle of rental car pitfalls. Is there a reason you can't take the train?
I agree with Tim. If you are only going from Sevilla to Madrid, then don't bother with a rental car, take the train instead.
If you don't plan to visit places along the way over a few days but intend to go from Seville to Madrid only, the AVE high speed train is a better option (faster and more comfortable) and maybe not necessarily more expensive for four people. Check the prices on the RENFE website (Spanish rail company). They have discounts for groups and for advance purchases.
Thank you so very much, everyone!! My husband & I will have the car for about a week before we meet up with our friends so I was really having trouble deciding what the heck to do. We have parking included with all of our Air BnB rentals, except for Seville. I owe you all a bunch of moola for saving me money AND my sanity by not having a car to deal with in Seville. Renfe it is!!
I truly appreciate all of your input! Cheers!!! :)
If you do get a rental car get a full size. A full size in Europe is more like a what we would call a mid-size or smaller in the US. We had a couple of very very nice full size cars for 2 adults & 2 kid & 4 carry-ons. We were snug. At one point we had 3 adults, 2 kids, 5 carry-ones. We shoved bags under the kids feet. Although the cars were considered full size, they were small enough to easily navigate small, crooked European streets. One car was an Audi. I can't remember the other.
