We are renting a car in the Cotswolds and then flying out of Heathrow. We are worried about driving to Heathrow (traffic, driving on the opposite side of the road, etc.) Does anyone know of a good place to drop-off the car and then take a train of bus to Heathrow? Or are we worried about nothing and should drop-off at Heathrow?
You will already have gotten the hang of the left side of the road. You'll be inbound heading east on the M4. As soon as you pass the beltway, your next left is the exit onto the roundabout from which you exit after 270 degrees onto the airport access road and all that's left is a half mile straight shot. Then all you'll have to watch for are the signs to the desired terminal, then the signs to the car return places - - there are signs both overhead and on the pavement. You'll be out of the car ten minutes after you leave the M4. Of course, others will suggest that you turn in the car at Reading, Bristol, and King's Lynn. :)
Michelle... agree with Ed (he has never steered me wrong). It's a pretty easy drive both in and out of Heathrow and you will definitely have the swing of things. I do always rent an automatic while in England, even though I drive a manual at home. Just one less thing to worry about, and I do now take my GPS loaded with maps, but did this drive a few times before I had it. Just pay attention near Heathrow, but really no different than any other airport.
Where you spend your final night and the departure time of your flight are things to consider. Since you never know how traffic will be, spend the night as close to Heathrow as possible. It's also a good idea to check ahead on where you can fill up with petrol in the morning, or, just fill up the night before. But then, as Ed mentioned, you could turn the car in at Kings Lynn : - )
Of course, you could drop your car in the Cotswolds; take the train from Moreton in the Marsh to Paddington (London)and then heathrow Express or Connect to Heathrow from Paddington. The train from Moreton probably takes about one and a half hours- paddington to Heathrow under half an hour. that way you would not br subject to the vagaries of tfraffic jams, tube closures etc
How far is Kings Lynn from Heathrow? Is there a train or a bus that goes directly to Heathrow? We are staying overnight at the airport and leave the next morning. So managing getting there on time will not be an issue.
King's Lynn was a joke - - aimed at the people who always say don't drive in. It's way the hell and gone up in the top of Norfolk.
