Anyone know of an easy metro stop outside or near the Circonvallazione where one can rent a car to Florence?
Not a metro stop but a short train ride away is Orvieto. Family members have rented from there to avoid the traffic in Rome and its outskirts.
Susan, do your really want to rent a car in Rome, and then drive to Florence? We usually use a rental car for most of our traveling in the EU, but in this case I would not. The train trip is just wonderful, and you DO NOT want to drive into Florence: you will most definitely get caught in the dreaded ZTL's: http://www.ricksteves.com/plan/destinations/italy/florence.htm If you really want to drive, pick up your rental car at the huge multiagency rental gargage under the Bourgesee Gallery. There is a walk-in entrance very close to the Spanish Steps. (We took the Metro to the SS's) We picked up our rental car there, and it was easy to get on the freeway, and "get outa Dodge". We went to Autoeurope.com, and used their web site to that pick-up location. They are a broker, based in Maine, that handles all of the "major's". I have also heard that access from Termini in good.
Thanks so much. Yes, we need a car to go to the lovely locales f Montepuciano, Pienza and Siena. But we wanted to pick up the car OUTSIDE of Rome, hopefully at a location that is easy to reach by Metro from downtown Rome and on the north side of Rome.
Susan, this link, Car Rental Locations in Rome, will show you car rental vendors in Rome, Orvieto, Chiusi, Civitavecchia and Viterbo. It might give you some options - Good Luck!
