We are still almost 8 months away from a trip to Sicily (from the US) but I am obsessed with checking flight prices. Does anyone have first hand experience buying a refundable ticket on United? I'm thinking of booking it to get the best picks of seats and then watching prices. When, or if, they drop I would cancel and get a refund and then buy a non-refundable ticket. Does that make sense or is it a waste of time and money. I'm hoping that there might be a price drop around Black Friday, but who knows. If the price does not decrease, can I just change to a cheaper, non-refundable ticket?
PS-- Yes, we have trip insurance so if it's a health issue or something, I'm sure we could cancel and get reimbursed. Also, I really don't want the trip credit you get if you change a non-refundable ticket.
