Recommended pick-up/drop-off locations for rental cars in Rome and Florence

My husband and I will be renting a car in Rome and returning it in Florence. The question is: Where are the best locations for car rentals to ensure limited driving in the city (better yet to avoid it altogether if possible). We've heard time and again about how bad the driving is for both these cities. We're only interested in driving in the area between the cities. :-)

Take a train from Rome to Orvieto (75 minutes). The Hertz station is across the street (100 yrds) from the train station. Picking up there may be more convenient than chasing around the big city looking for a rental location. (Note: I rented a Hertz car thru AutoEurope.com at a lower rate than renting from Hertz directly.) Hertz' 60 Sansovino location in Florence is 2 miles north of the train station. I avoided the ZTL by leaving town by coming in from the North.
You can always turn cars into the airport rental locations. I try to avoid airports as there always seems to be some kind of very high tax or surcharge. The city office rates are often cheaper.

Hi,
Thanks for your interest in helping, but we followed the first person's recommendation who answered my post and we've already booked our rental through Auto Europe. We're going to pick up the rental car at Orvieto's train station and drop it off at the airport in Florence. Simple solution. Why didn't I think of it??? :-) Warm regards, Stephanie
