I'm ready to buy plane tickets to Italy for RS Best of Tuscany tour (begins in Florence, ends in Lucca) and am seeking advice, opinions, recommendations etc. Is it better to go to FCO, and then train to Florence then train from Lucca to Florence and depart from there back to the US? Or book R/T to Florence? Departure airport is Denver. Thanks in advance for your suggestions!
I think it all comes down to price and schedule. Is the convenience of the smaller airport worth the usually increased cost? Are the flight options convenient?
Try Google Flights to check flight options and prices across many airlines.
Have a great trip. Safe travels!
If it's not too much more, I would fly in and out of Florence, but you will have to connect somewhere in Europe. For us, it was Paris. The Florence airport is easy because it's so small.
Florence is a small airport, only three baggage carousels. Pretty efficient, there is light rail direct from the airport to the city center. Nb. be sure to validate the ticket before boarding the train, as the fare inspectors do check and the fine in steep.
I flew into Milan and then took the train to Florence. (about 2 hours).Only because sometimes planes can't land in Florence if the weather is adverse. And also, there are tons of flights to Milan so that's easy for me. That being said, I flew home from Bologna. That would work too and then just pop on the train. I enjoy watching the countryside go by on the train so I don't mind the connections. You're going to love that tour! Rome would be okay too. And another pretty train ride. (about 1 3/4 hours). So wherever you can find a good airline fare.
You could fly non-stop into London Heathrow and catch a connecting flight to Florence. But it's a seasonal flight and I don't know if it would be running when you're wanting to go.
Another option would be to fly Denver to London Heathrow and then catch a connecting flight to Pisa. From there you could take a 1 hour train ride into Florence.
Upon your return, you could catch a short local train from Lucca into Pisa and fly back to LHR where you'd catch a non-stop back to Denver.
Thank you for all the great suggestions!
