Recommendation on reserved seating on trains

This is my first time traveling by train and I'm not sure how busy trains are in Europe. I'm going to Vienna, Prague, Krakow, and Budapest October 14, 2007-October 27, 2007. Do I have to reserve a seat and if I don’t, what are the chances that I will have to stand? Are there other areas in the train that you stand if you have to, so that you are not over standing people?

Julie, are you traveling by Eurail? I'd guess no since the tickets between these places are cheap. There are some trains which require reservations, but if you aren't on one of those I wouldn't bother. October will be a good month to travel and you shouldn't have problems getting a seat unless you are traveling to a city that has something special happening at the time of your travel. When you buy your tickets they will tell you what you need. I like the trip planner at Belgium's train site (http://plannerint.b-rail.be/bin/query.exe/en?L=profi&) as it give good info in the easiest format. Just glancing it looked like most trains Vienna-Budapest don't require reservations, but if you are traveling at night, those almost always require a reservation.
