I’m looking at flights for August from ORD to Rome. Depending on what part of August we go to they are anywhere from $1500 – $2500+ Cheaper for three people to go on Icelandair. The layover in Reykjavík is 50 minutes. And searching the forum seems people have done this quite often and it’s worked out fine, but the reviews aren’t recent. Has anybody flown through there recently with a shorter layover? It seems to be a small airport from what I’ve read? I could make everybody stuff all of their things into carryons if we had to, but it would be easier if we checked our small suitcases – do we need to get those in Reykjavík and recheck them?
You don’t deal with the luggage in Reykjavik. Customs is at your destination.
Reykjavik is a small airport and very easy to do with a short layover. I wouldn't worry about it at all. Check your bags through and should be fine.
This is standard practice in Reykjavik.
Your bags will be checked through to Rome. You will go through immigration in Reykjavik but it is very fast.
Are you booking this on one airline and one ticket directly with the airline? If not, don't attempt it.
Flew through Reykjavik in September. Short connections both times. Planes we’re running late and we were panicking but they reassured us we would make our flight and we ended up leaving 30 min late so everyone could get on.
To Frank II - yes, this would all be one ticket, all with Iceland Air.
It’s hard not to snatch this flight up, with how nuts the other prices are.
Thanks for the replies!
My experience is a few years ago but consistent with above. These short connections are Icelandair's bread and butter, they do them all the time. With one ticket you should be fine.
In June (of 2022) we had a 1 hour 20 minute layover on our way to Paris. We had more than enough time and did not feel rushed at all. We even had time for a leisurely snack of croissants and Icelandic yogurt. I’ve connected with as little as 40 minutes there, though that was in 2014.
