Hi everyone,
We are planning our big trip to Oslo for our child's sport tournament starting July 1st. Our tentative plans are to fly from Seattle to Oslo on 06/30, and do sight seeing in Oslo and another big city after the tournament, and fly out from one of the major cities (choices are London, Amsterdam, Copenhagen, and Stockholm) back to Seattle around 7/16 or 17. Since we have never traveled to Europe during summer, I am wondering what would be the reasonable airfares we should expect. I see a lot of airlines selling tickets for the dates we want to purchase around $1200 - $1600. I have been tracking the prices on Google Flights for a while, and seems it is not coming down under $1100, unless we decide to fly with Virgin Atlantic or Norwegian. I am not aiming for the cheapest airfare, I just want to know what is reasonable from seasoned travelers. Icelandair seems the best option for us, but we never flown with them. Also, should we consider Norwegian or VA? After adding all the fees, it accumulates rather quickly... Thank you in advance!
I always go in the summer, starting mostly the second half of May staying into/through June or even early July. . Flying from the west coast, ie SFO or OAK non-stop, I would settle on $1200, which I have paid in past years. If you can get $1100 or less on Virgin Atlantic, I would suggest booking that one. I only fly to Paris, Frankfurt or London. The price could be dictated by its destination
Yes, consider Virgin Atlantic or Norwegian. We have flown Virgin many times, both Premium Economy in it's own cabin and First Class when we were upgraded. Family and friends have flown Norwegian and were quite pleased; they flew Premium Economy.

If they are participating on 7/1, you really should leave earlier than 6/30
Those prices are reasonable for summer flights. Doubt if it will go down. Icelandair will probably give you the shortest total flying time and layover time. Since you go through immigration at the Reykjavik airport you don’t have to in Oslo. Also you can easily book flying into Oslo and out of a different city on the Icelandair website.
We often fly Norwegian from Orlando to London Gatwick and then Easyjet to our destination, but Norwegian doesn’t have as many flights from Seattle and if you have a problem with connecting flights you are on your own.
You can fly from SeaTac to Oakland on Southwest and change over to Norwegian AIr Shuttle for a non-stop to Oslo. But the Legacy carriers are matching their$1,100ish fares--the first time I've even seen them close recently. You'd need to check specific days to get accurate airfares.
The absolutely cheapest way is to fly Lufthansa out of Vancouver, but the flights are 18 hours--pretty lengthy stopover in Munich. The fastest way is Icelandair out of Vancouver @ around $1275 connecting in Iceland--total time 11 hours.
Oslo obviously is not easily reached out of SeaTac.
Hi joe32F,
Thank you for your concern. July 1st is the day we are required to arrive and settle down with the team. The tournament itself does not start until the 2nd.
Thank you everyone for your very useful suggestions and advices! I really appreciate them.
Sounds like the prices I am looking at are reasonable after all. I am leaning to either Virgin Atlantic or Icelander at this point. Delta is nice but quite pricer, and I am not a big fun of British Airlines.
I see that Icelandair's layover in Reykjavik is only 1 hour. This makes me nervous. If we have to go through customs, do we have enough time?
No worries readygo. Since Icelandair is providing both flights they will move you through immigration on time.
If Icelandair will sell you the ticket they will think it's doable, and Keflavík is not a big airport so I wouldn't be worried about it. Something I would be worried about though is self connecting somewhere, especially if it involves Norwegian as their long haul flights are notorious for being delayed.
I checked Condor as we got a very low cost flight in business class with them last summer. But they want $1700 for a RT economy ticket on your dates.
My very travel-savvy son likes Virgin Atlantic for his family travel, so they are worth a look. And my other son chose Iceland Air for his family travel last summer. We also have a lot of friends who are loyal to Iceland Air
Whichever you choose, be sure you are clear on what is and is not included, and be sure to add in all the extra charges you might face when comparing costs.
I am curious about your "not a fan" statement about British Airways. Is that becauseof the seat selection fee?
Thank you everyone for your continuing advice. I think I doing a lot of research on what is included in these tickets...
Lola, I am not a big fun of British Airline for the seating fees and service we received before. But, that was years ago, and maybe they changed?
The seating fees on British Airways are definitely annoying. As for service, we have flown them every year but one since 2009, and have not noticed any decline in service. But we fly business class with our miles ( which is another source of annoyance, as the Avios tickets carry a hefty surcharge). So wwe have no personal experience with poor service, But I have seen complaints on FlyerTalk about a decline in the brand in recent years.
We have friends who have switched from flying BA to Iceland Air with their Alaska Miles, and they are pleased, but they fly in Saga class or whatever the premium class is called. We will likely give them a try at some point, when we run out of Avios.
BA's seating fees are annoying, and a good reason to choose another airline. I have the impression that they are popular here, but I can't se why t.b.h. They are not that good, known for what might be the worst business class among European airlines.
And the way Brexit is heading, I would not recommend an itinerary that involves a connection in the UK after 2018-03-29.
Happy holidays, everyone!
Just wanted to let you know I purchased tickets from Seattle to Oslo to Copenhagen to Seattle with Icelandair yesterday. The price dropped a bit so I went ahead and bought them. I am so happy! I don't have to dream about buying tickets anymore! Thank you so much for all your help and suggestions. I really appreciated them. Now, I am going to undue all my alerts from Google Flights. Next is a search for a good hotel/apartment!
True, one annoying thing about BA is that booking on-line, you have to pay extra for basically choosing your seat. That's why I don't do it, I wait until check-in, asking the staff person if anything is available towards the rear, ie an aisle seat in the back is the most preferable.
