Re: Train and accomodation before taking bernina express

Hello everyone. My husband and I are on our first trip overseas. We can only get there in winter which isnt all bad. Just cold. Anyway I really want to take him on the bernina express before we go on the golden pass tour. WE will be in Venice prior to the Bernina express.

Can anyone tell me how to get from Venice to tirano without a car. Also if the timetables dont permit change over can we stay a night in Torino. Is there anywhere to stay there. I have no idea. I cant find anything but I am sure there is something. We need the people to speak english a bit.

Many thanks for any help you can give us.

Jennifer. The best site to check European rail schedules is at bahn.de (click on English in the upper right.) It shows 6 trains/day between Venice and Tirano, with a change in Milan. The journey times run from 5.5 - 6 hours, tops. Once you find the journey you like, you can take advantage of advance booking fares (mainly the "Amica" fare) at the Italian rail website, www.trenitalia.com (change to English at top center.) Trenitalia's website will only give you tickets out 60 days for that journey. Since it is a regional train from Milan to Tirano (no discounts available), you'll have to book Venice-Milan to get the Amica discount...or buy the whole journey at the standard price. Regional trains neither require nor accept reservations or advance purchases when done on their own....you can get a ticket for the Milan-Tirano leg before you leave Venice. The Trenitalia website can be problematic. Go to the site and register first. When your password comes back by e-mail, immediately sign in and change your password to something more memorable. Then you should be able to purchase with no problem.
