Railpasses, reservations, point-to-point tickets and more (questions)

So I'm wanting to get rail tickets from Paris to Barcelona (among others). On the RailEurope.com website I am seeing tickets on June 13 (exactly one week before) going for about $110 for 2nd class economy. However, for just a reservation it looks like it's $78. This is an overnight train, but it seems odd to me that the reservation is so expensive! Is it even worth getting a rail pass?

A "reservation" for a night train is not a very good term. It is a "supplement" to pay for the use of the compartment. Think of it this way. The railpass pays for the use of the rails; the reservation pays for the accommodations. In a lot of cases, you can get the total package, rail and accommodations, at a promotional price for less than one day of the railpass plus the accommodation. I would check out this alternative before committing to a railpass.
