Rail vs Car rental

We will arrive at Charles du Gaul and want to get to Chalon sur Saone. I found that train tickets for two (2nd class) cost more the a 1 day 1 way car rental (81.07 euros from Hertz, confirmed) We are a bit confused as trains should be lower in cost. Your comments would help

While advance purchase discount fares can be very cheap, standard 2nd class fares for your route are expensive. If you tell me what date and time you'll arrive at CDG, I'll check www.voyages-sncf.com to see if any discount fares are still available.

Perhaps you know a way to run a car without fuel, and bypass toll stations. Michelin estimates the cost of fuel for a compact car plus tolls at €58,26. So rental plus fuel plus tolls comes to €119.33 or $186.15.

I found fares for 2 on TGV at €54,80 PREMS, and fully refundable std fare at €100,20 or $156.

Perhaps you were confused by the price, $162 for 2, listed on RailEurope's website, but that still is less than the car rental, fuel, and tolls.
