Rail vs Air

Does anyone have a suggestion which is the best deal to travel from either Nurnberg or Munich, Germany to Paris, France? A group of four of us will be travelling on Tues. the 29th of Sept. 2009, one way only. Thank you in advance, Lee

It's a six hour journey by rail to Paris with a quick change in Stuttgart (Only five hours from Nuremberg). Air Berlin flies from both Nuremberg and Munich to Paris Orly. It's a bit of a toss up which is faster when you take into consideration how much time it takes to get to/from the airports and the time you have to allow for check in/airport security. If it were me I would do it by train...it will take you from city center to city center.

Thanks Mike, I tried to find the price by rail and it seems to be about $280.00 per person. Air is less, but just as long of time. Any suggestions from leaving from another airport or train closer to the border of Germany - France? Also considering purchasing a two country rail pass. Thanks again.

Where did you get that $280 price, Rail Europe?
If so they are a rip off and always overcharge. Buy purchasing tickets directly from the German Rail site (www.bahn.de)you can get advance non-refundable/non-changeable tickets for only 39 euros per person. It's too early to book tickets for your travel date, this time next month the discount fares should be available.

Hi Mike, I looked on the DB site for the prices. I must have input something wrong! Sorry to give you a heart attack! I too thought it was way too much money. I would rather go by train myself. I will try to input it again the correct way. Thanks for your help. Lee

When you go on the DB site, put in a random travel date at the end of August...it will give you a better idea of what fares will be available.

You can book up to 90 days in advance on the DB site. For your travel date that should be 1 July.

Hey Mike and Tim, thank you for your help. I think we will take the train. I'm sure it will be better in that we can get up and walk around. At that time of year, would you recomend reserved 1st class seats for such a long trip? Thanks again, Lee

You're welcome. For a long journey like that I do usually splurge for first class, but second class isn't bad either...just a matter of personal preference. As RS says, both classes go at the same speed and get you there at the same time;)

I'll second the "you're welcome" motion!

The 1st class seating arrangement is 2 seats on one side of the center aisle and 1 on the other. 2nd class is 2 + 2. 1st class seats are a bit bigger, but I think 2nd class is perfectly fine and there is plenty of legroom.
