Rail Travel Rules?

This may be a ridiculous question but are passangers allowed to carry bottles of wine on the trains in France, Germany and Italy? Thanks so much.

Actually in France locals can be immediately imprisoned for not carrying wine on their person while out in public:) But seriously.....no problem. One is allowed to carry bottles of wine on the trains.

CARRY alcohol? Many travelers consume wine or beer on trains. It's sold in dining cars and on carts passing through the aisles. You can drink your own as well. The German railways (DB) serve beer in their own special glasses: http://fernmuendlich.files.wordpress.com/2008/05/bahnbier1.jpg I think it's forbidden on some occasions, like when a big soccer match is on. The costumed Fastnacht (Carnival) revelers in Germany were mixing drinks onboard on two of my train trips last month. Having a drink on the way is just another of the pleasures of train travel. Don't try that in your car over there.

You should carry them on, but leave them behind - empty ;-)

@Michael, Locals can be imprisoned! LOL! That comment brightened my afternoon. @Russ, I think it's forbidden on some occasions, like when a big soccer match is on. Based on my experiences last year, that's NOT the case in Germany! I boarded a train in Bacharach on the day of a World Cup Game in which Germany was playing, and it was an "entertaining" ride! It was filled with numerous "youth" who were imbibing heavily (even at 10:00). Of course, I had to raise a toast to Germany, so had a few with them as well. Eventually they began smoking too, which of course is strictly "Verboten" on the trains. However, I didn't see a Conductor for the entire trip! It's unfortunate I can't post photos or videos here, as I could provide examples. @Donna, I've seen "locals" drinking wine on the trains on numerous occasions in various countries, especially Germany and Italy. It was often accompanied by a "picnic lunch". The Europeans seem to be more "civilized" with their liquor laws than many jurisdictions on this side of the pond. Cheers!
