Rail travel in Italy

We are planning a trip to Italy in October. When we ask for rail schedules from Rome to Naples, it says "no trains match your search." We are able to get schedules for, say, June. Are they only published a few months in advance? Also, I am unable to see the circumvesuviana schedules at all. The www.vesuviana.it mentioned in Rick's current book leads to a dead end. Any suggestions?

Where are you looking? You should be looking on the official Italian railways site: http://www.trenitalia.com/tcom-en
Other sites (resellers) do no list all trains, and may charge more. Timetables change twice per year, in December and June. The change in June is minor, 95-99% of the trains will be the same, but times past June have not yet been finalised, and will not be for some time. I suggest you pick a date before June (same day of the week) and look up the times for that date. You can assume there will be no major changes.

From what I remember, Trenitalia posts their schedules about 3 or 4 months in advance. If you know the days of the week you will be traveling, you can check the current schedules to get an idea of timing. It shouldn't change too much.

Sorry, I'm not familiar with the Circumvesuviana, but I did get the same error message when trying to access the website. I found this alternative that may be of help: http://www.sitabus.it/en/circumvesuviana-timetables-and-rates/

You may need the Italian name for the train station, too. For example, Roma Termini.

Roma Termini....

....and Napoli Centrale. And you're way too early for fall bookings. Schedules don't change a lot, though, so use the same days of the week you plan to travel in any month as a rough guide.

You don't need Circumvesuviana schedules unless going east/south of Naples, and there is more than one line. Where are you wanting to go?
