As posted previously, I'll be in Germany for approx 6 weeks in May. My husband and I will either fly into Frankfurt or Munich and fly out from Frankfurt. The first two weeks will be our "vacation" and will be spent in Bavaria with our "home base" in Munich. We also plan to travel to Salzburg during that time. After two weeks, we will travel to Landstuhl, where we will stay for four weeks. My husband will work M-F while I travel during the week on one/two day trips. On the weekends, we will both take trips to Paris, Metz, Aachen, etc. We will then fly out of Frankfurt. The question is...what rail pass to purchase? I'm leaning toward a Eurorail Select Twin, but am unsure at this point. Advice?
You really can't go much of anywhere by train from Landstuhl except to Kaiserslautern. From Kaiserslautern you can make excellent connections throughout Germany. There are multiple trains every day between Landstuhl and Kaiserslautern, a journy of about a 15-20 minute. I have gone to Koln, Berlin, Paris and many other cities with ease from K-Town.
within the states of Rheinland-Pfalz and Saarland, Germany, you can use the "Rheinland-Pfalz" ticket/daypass, which gets you to the French border: http://www.vrminfo.de/en/tickets-and-fares/ticket-offers/rheinland-pfalz-ticket/ From there you might want a France railpass. Or individual rail tickets. Or you may want to look at simple p2p tickets bought in advance at a huge discount - you have time. Try exactly 92 days in advance for the best chance of grabbing the ones you want. 2 can get from Kaiserslautern to Paris for just 78€ total on some departures at www.bahn.de .
