I will be flying into Manchester, Eng, in nov 08. Train to York.( day trip by train to Durham. Then train from York to Edinburgh. Then train to Inverness/Fort William and then back to Manchester.
Any suggestions. I have the rail map.
Thanks
Use the Journey Planner at www.nationalrail.co.uk to get timetables and fares. If you enter some arbitrary dates within the next 30-60 days, you'll see which routes offer discount fares for advance booking. Walk-up fares in the UK can be very expensive. Butif you can get discount fares, point-to-point tickets will probably be cheaper than a railpass.
To me, your Inverness- Fort Williams route will be the most scenic. Around the Iverness area you'll be climbing above the treeline---very desolate but beautiful. If memory serves me well you'll pass the ferry stop to Skye. If you have time take the ferry at Glenelg? and spend a night at Skye. There's a public bus that rides around the beautiful island and ends up at the other ferry stop. Take that ferry across to Maillaig?and continue w/your wonderful train journey. Good luck and have fun.
Saw the Brit Rail map from Tim's suggested website. It's not Glenelg but Kyle of Lochalsh. Just looking at the map brought back some wonderful memories.
