rail travel from Neuchatel to Italian coast.

We are hoping to get from Neuchatel down to visit Cinque Terra by train, is this crazy or does someone have a suggested route? Thank you.

I hope you don't intend this as a daytrip! It will take 8 hours or more depending on your route. For example, you could leave Neuchater around 6:30 am and head to Bern in time (departing 7:34) to catch the IC 51 to Milan, which is supposed to arrive there at 10:35. According to the Swiss rail site, there is track work going on along this route and there are delays at Domodossola, around 20 minutes or more. You could also head to Lausanne first, aiming for IC 37 which departs at 8:20 and is supposed to arrive in Milan at 11:35. The goal would be to take IC 665 which departs Milan at 12:10 and arrives in Monterosso at 15:02. There might be earlier departures from Milan that would involve a change at Genova. At Monterosso you can change to a regional train to reach the village of your choice. You should probably contact SBB about that track work and delays before you make definite plans.
