Rail travel from Milan to Cinque Terre

Inquiring about trains from Milan to Cinque Terre (Vernazza) the Trenitalia website puts me on a train with connections in Sestri (Levante) with only 6 minutes
from one train to the next? Is that possible? I assume the train station is small.

The Trenitalia web site has me leaving Milan at 16:05, arriving in Sestri Levante at 18:49; leaving Sestri Levante at 18:55 and arriving in Vernazza at 19:30.

Looking at the station on the satellite view of Google Maps, it appears to be very small with about 4 to 6 platforms.

If you arrive in Sestri Levante on time, then 6 minutes is okay. If you want a longer connection time, stay on the train as far as Monterosso (two stops beyond Sestri Levante) and connect there to the same train you would take if you got on in Sestri Levante. You'll have 20 minutes to make the connection. You'll have to book your tickets accordingly, of course.

Tim, Thanks for the helpful information. So, you seen to know the deal so here are two other questions - do I need to make a reservation in advance or can I just buy the ticket when I get to Milan and do they accept US credit cards? Thanks.

Hi Nancy. The main advantage to me of buyng in advance is a much lower price. However, the MIlan to Ct trains are already quite inexpensive and there is only a small discount for buying in advance, so to me it isn't worth locking myself into an exact date and time just to save 5 or 10 euros. those tix I just buy a day or two ahead from any train station in Italy. On the other hand if you are buying high speed tix such as CT to Rome or rome to florence, etc, definitely consider buyng in advance for big savngs. All of the manned station tix counters in Italy will gladly take your US credit card. Not sure about the machines, but I know the machines will galdly take cash. Does that help!
