Can I get a direct train from Malpensa Airport to Stresa without going back to Milan? Or would you recommend using the bus service?

No. The train service to the Central Train Station started this year so I have no experience with it. The shuttle bus to the station took abut an hour but do not know if that has been impacted by the new train service.

Malcolm, There are no direct trains from Milan / Malpensa to Stresa AFAIK. I checked briefly and found two different travel methods: 1.) Bus / Train combination - this appears to be the quickest method, with travel times as short as 1H:25M. From Malpensa the trip is by Bus to Busto Arsizio and then Regionale train to Stresa. 2.) Train combination - the second option is slightly longer, with travel times of about 2H:10M. This trip would be via EuroStar Italia from Malpensa to Milano Centrale, and then Regionale from there to Stresa. When you arrive in Stresa, the main part of the town is downhill from the station. If you're travelling light, you should be able to walk (depending on which Hotel you're staying at), otherwise there should be a Taxi at the station. Happy travels!
