My wife and i, both in our 80's, plan to travel by rail from Amsterdam to Brussels, Brussels to Paris with many nights in the three cities as a base for local excursions. We will travel with medium size roll-on luggage between cities; however we are concerned about our ability to handle the roll-ons in and about the three rail stations. Are porters available to assist us with our luggage? Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks, Howard
It's highly unlikely, I am sorry to say, that you will see a porter in any of the stations you will be using. Do look for signs indicating elevators to reach the platform levels where necessary. What makes train travel difficult for me sometimes is actually getting the luggage onto the train. Occasionally the coach entrance is level with the platform and you can just roll the bags on, but more often there are 3 very steep steps and getting luggage up them is a royal & difficult pain. Last time a kind and strong man helped us, both on and off the train. I hope you will be so lucky.
Platforms at stations outside the UK tend to be low and you usually won't have porters. I wouldn't pack luggage so heavy that you can't lift it four feet or so.
