I am currently deployed to Afghanistan. On my way home I am considering taking two weeks to travel Europe on a whim. I will likely fly into Paris of Frankfurt from here. Because of my situation, I cannot have rail passes or tickets shipped to me. Is it going to cost me a lot more to get something like a 3 country, 5 day SelectPass at a major rail station in either city?
Rail passes are overrated. If you know your itinerary, you can save by buying tickets online with a "print at home" option, or a code that you use to pick them up at the station. No shipping involved. I don't know if you even can buy a select pass once younare in Europe. Maybe someone else does.
The Eurail website says that you can buy some Eurail passes, including the select pass, although not the full complement, in Europe at major rail centers, although the price will be higher. Some advance purchase tickets (particularly for Germany) can be printed out online, so if you have access to a printer there, you can get purchase them. I think advance purchased tickets for French Rail can be picked up at a station in France.
Thank you for the response thus far. I will find out which city I am flying into and out of and then inquire here on the best course of action.
