We'll be flying from Amsterdam to Vienna and then visiting 5 to 6 countries from Vienna --- Lower Germany, Czech Republic, Austria, Hungary, Slovakia, and maybe Croatia.
Would it be cheaper to purchase 2nd class reserved train reservations as needed or purchase a 30 day 6 country Rail Pass? Dennis
We were in Hungary, Czech Republic, Austria, and Germany last fall. I can say that 2nd class in eastern Europe is rather rudimentary. If you can, you should consider 1st class, and I would recommend point to point tickets as they are less expensive in the long run. We tried to always buy our tickets three days ahead to take advantage of a discount.
You really can't tell until you do the math. Use resources online to find out how expensive the point to point tickets are for all your trips, then compare to the cost of a eurail pass, making note of countries that require reservations for passholders on high speed trains and factoring that cost in as well. Spreadsheet time!
