My husband and I are going to the Amalfi Coast in mid April and then will be heading off to Rome. I had planned on going from Positano to Sorrento via SITA bus then to Naples and on to Rome. I just found out that there is also a train in Salerno, would it be quicker to go from Positano to Salerno and then on to Rome? We will not have a car with us. Thank you
According to viamichelin.com, under ideal traffic conditions it takes a little over half an hour to drive from Positano to Sorrento and a little over one hour to drive from Positano to Salerno. I don't know what the corresponding bus schedules are. Direct EuroStar Italia trains from Salerno to Rome make the trip in 2 hours. If you have to connect in Naples, the trip will take up to 30 minutes longer. It takes 1 hour to get from Sorrento to Naples on Circumvesuviana trains. It takes just over 1 hour to get from Naples to Rome on EuroStar Italia trains. Of course you'll have to allow some time to connect in Naples. It seems to me that it will be faster to go via Sorrento.
I am emailed my hotels that I have booked to see if a switch of nights would be possible. I was figuring that Ravello to Salerno to Rome would be quicker than Positano to Sorrento via bus and Sorrento to Naples via train and then on to Rome. Would you agree that the first would be shorter and less hassle?
From Ravello, you'd take the short bus ride down the hill to Amalfi to catch the bus to Salerno. The bus from Amalfi to Salerno takes an hour & 15 minutes. Here's a link to the bus schedules: http://tinyurl.com/5ursnv A hydrofoil from Amalfi to Salerno takes only 35 minutes, but they may not have started running when you're there in April. Then, as Tim said, the express train from Salerno to Rome takes 2 hours. If you go via Sorrento, the bus from Amalfi to Sorrento takes an hour and 40 minutes. The Circumvesuviana from Sorrento to Naples takes an hour. Then an express train to Roma takes an hour and 10 minutes. Get out your calculator.
