Flying Delta from Seattle, WA to Marseille, France with a 50 min layover in Amsterdam- is 50 minutes enough time at this airport to turn thru customs etc and catch our next flight?
Yes and no. IF everything is on schedule you might make it. We had a similar connection with Delta last winter and missed it. The plane was about 15 minutes late and, unfortunately we had not thought about it, but we were sitting in the far back corner from the exit door. Took over 20 minutes to exit the plane. By then we were dead and didn't know it. That are fast lines for immigrations, and recheck for security but we had a departure on the other side. Too far, couldn't make it. Delta/Air France was very nice and quickly re-booked us on a flight about two hours later. You need to get a seat near the exit door to have a chance.
Even if you make the connection, your luggage may not. The odds are better than when going through Charles de Gaulle, but there still is a possibility that your bags won't meet you in the arrival hall. The lost-luggage desk in Marseille has plenty of experience finding the strays. The agent told me so when I showed my empty hands. My bag was on the next flight and 90 minutes after I reached my hotel it did too. I kept the Air France T-shirt
from the overnight emergency kit as a souvenir.
50 minutes is a very short time depending on how far you have to go to make your connection, it is a big airport and if you hit it at a high traffic time you are going tobe out of luck. One other thing. I have been using the Kayak.com app on my i-pad to keep track of non stops from detroit to Paris (Air France) and Frankfurt (Lufthansa) just out of curiosity. While I am short of having enough data points to have high statisical significance I can report that for eastbound flights the average arrival time is 3 minutes early with a standard deviation of 20 minutes. Put in simpler terms, while the average arrival time is 3 minutes early the actual times have been as far off as 30 minutes early and 1 hour and 5 minutes late. The west bound flight data is worse, the winds aloft can really mess things up.
