Questions about buying point-to-point train tickets

My husband and I are going to be traveling to Italy and France (starting next Monday) and I'm unsure about how to deal with buying tickets. My questions are as follows:

  1. Is it the easiest just to buy the ticket to the next destination as soon as you arrive at the train station of your current destination? For example, when I arrive at Termini at Rome I would buy my tickets for Florence. I already know what day and time I would like to leave.

  2. Do you make reservations at the same time you buy the ticket?

Any other advice you could give me about buying point-to-point would be greatly appreciated.

If, when you arrive at Termini, you know the train on which you want to go to Florence, get your ticket. Why wait? Tickets on Italian Eurostar (ES*) trains come with a mandatory reservation.

Judey,

To add to Lee's always excellent replies, you can purchase tickets at Roma Termini either from a ticket agent of from the automatic Kiosks at the station. Have a look at www.roninrome.com for a description of how these work.

You might find it helpful to research each of the trips you'll be taking using the bahn.de website, so that you have some idea on the departure times, number of changes and other information.

On trains with reserved seats, you'll be assigned a Car No. (Carozza) and a Seat No. (Posto). I wouldn't bother with first class seats on the EuroStar Italia / Alta Velocita (your choice depending on your travel budget).

Happy travels!
