hello all, in rick's france book he details a trip from paris to giverny, onto rouen and back to paris in one day. my wife and i would like to do this trip. if we buy round trip tickets paris to rouen, are we able to get off at vernon (the stop for giverny), see monet's gardens, and then reboard a later train for rouen using the same ticket and then use our return portion of the ticket to get back to paris? or do we have to buy at ticket for paris to vernon, vernon to rouen and rouen to paris? thanks in advance for the help--hopefully someone has done this same trip.
First, while you can do one bookiing and get return (roundtrip) tickets, there is no discount for doing so. Technically you are booking single tickets each way. Second, with TER (regional) trains, you can buy a ticket from point A to point B, get off at any station in between points, and continue your journey on another train. There is no discount for advance booking so you can jump on any train. However, most of the trains that run from Paris to Rouen via Vernon are Intercites trains. Booked well in advance, it's possible to get a discount fare on those trains, but the ticket will be for a specific departure date and time. Perhaps, if you pay full fare, you can jump on and off like on regional trains; but I don't know if that's true or not.
Please check first. We could not do this on the Italian trains so I doubt you can do this on the French ones.
You can do it on Italian regionale trains. There is open seating on those trains and no reservations are possible. Tickets are good on any train. The same thing applies to French regional trains. For example, I once bought a ticket from Nice to Cannes and another one from Cannes to Nice. When I left Cannes, I got off in Antibes, stayed for a few hours, and then took anotherr train to Nice, all on the same ticket.
