Question re: Delta Airlines

I have a friend who recently flew from NYC to Ireland via Delta Airlines. She said once she booked her tickets, they were given the option of "extra inches" on their seats. She says this was under $20; not an upgrade to Premium Economy or anything like that.

Has anyone heard of this? Can you give me any information? Thanks!

Most of the time I fly Delta. What you are referring to is called economy comfort. I will say that I have never seen it for that low of a price for international travel. I flew Delta to Europe Sept. 2015, and I would have gladly paid that small amount!

Honestly, it didn't sound very realistic to me. The woman, nice as she is, is a bit on the silly side and I'm not sure she knows what she's talking about. Oh well...

I see Economy Comfort offered domestically for $19 sometimes. I too would be surprised if that was the international rate. I just looked at flights for next summer and the upgrade was $109 and $119 each way. I suppose if it was the off-off season it could have been possible, but I'd be surprised. This option includes "premium snacks" (whatever that is) and free drinks, too, and I don't think $19 would cover that expense on an international flight!

I just flew Delta in September 2015 (JFK to Madrid and Barcelona to JFK). On the first leg, the upgrade to Economy Comfort would have been $120; on the second leg, it would have been $80. Both of these prices were at the time of booking. For at least one leg (I don't remember all the details), I was also offered the upgrade at the time of check-in, and I remember the price was slightly different; not sure if it was higher or lower.

Of course, I was also offered an upgrade to business class - at substantially more money.

The only way to know what upgrades are being offered and at what price is to do a dummy booking on the airline's own website; you will be offered the upgrade options before you enter payment information, so you don't have to commit before seeing the options.

Nothing like having to pay up for what should be standard spacing. It's so, so easy to hate the airlines these days.

Harold, I didn't know one could do dummy bookings. I'll give that a try!

If she had a flight with one stop, she could have paid that amount for the extra legroom on the short flight. The longer flights are in the hundred-dollars figures vs. the ten-dollars figures.
