Next week, I have to make a long drive from Belgium to Germany and back again that same day. I know most of the rest stop petrol stations in Belgium require a chip-embedded credit card to pay at the pump, but does anyone here know if this is the same in Germany? I remember paying at the pump years ago in Germany, but I don't know if this has changed, and I would prefer not to withdraw a big wad of cash to pay for my fuel.
Pay at pump is not really the issue. You can use your plain vanilla credit card inside anywhere. I do it al the time.
Agreed, you shouldn't have any problems in Germany if you pay inside after you pump.
Uhm, paying at the pump is not common in Germany. Gas stations depend on the revenue generated from their 7-11-type stores inside the cashier's building which is why after filling up you need to memorize the number of your pump and pay inside. Any major brand credit card will work, no chip required. Also Maestro and PIN works, too. Keep in mind gas is significantly cheaper in Belgium than it is in Germany. If you can fill up to the top before entering Germany. If you have to fill up in Germany off-Autobahn stations are cheaper than on-Autobahn ones. www.benzinpreis.de
A question I should have asked... is there a particularly long stretch of road without any petrol stations? Yes, that would be the A62-A60-A27 route between Landstuhl and Liege! Beautiful scenery, but there was not a single petrol station along the route, and I could not see any immediately off the exits, with the exception of Trier.
Along the freeways (Autobahns) there is a gas station at least every 40km (usually considerably less) and right before every rest area with gas station they'll tell you when to expect the next one.
