Question about ticket validation

Do I have to validate tickets in Italy if they are trains which I have a reservation booked on already with an assigned seat....or the night train?

Technically no, if it is for a specific train/seat because that ticket cannot be used at another time. However, it is good practice to validate everything and develop that habit. The penalty for not validation is sever.
