Question about reservations classes with railpass

Hi all,
I have a 21 consecutive day global railpass. I know this entitles me to first class seats but does it obligate me to purchase first class reservations as well or am I able to choose second class? I ask because I was informed that although I have a first class railpass I am able to travel in comfort 2 on Thalys. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

We always drive anymore but I do know that the ICE (high speed) trains require a reservation and a small additional fee (well worth it). Usually there is a special line at the major train stations for this service and for Eurorail pass holders. I'm sure others will fill in the gap. Be aware that high speed trains can and do shorten stops to make up lost time so if it says a 10 minute stop it may end up more like 4.

A "reservation fee" on Thalys is really a surcharge because it is a premium train. A seat reservation comes with the surcharge. I believe there is a different surcharge for 2nd class on Thalys depending on whether you have a 1st or 2nd class railpass.

As for stop times, a train has a scheduled arrival time and a scheduled departure time. If it arrives a few minutes late, they will still try to depart on time. So, if your arriving train is on time, you will still have 10 minutes to make the connection, you'll just be standing on the platform for a few minutes before the 2nd train arrives. The 2nd train will not leave early. However, if the train arrives late and it is taking longer for people to board, they won't leave with passengers still waiting at the door.
