Purchase select fare before leaving or when needed when there

Arr Amsterdam Jun 15, travel via train to Paris. Paris to Avignon by train. Avignon to Nice by car (if possible to Florence) Florence to Rome by train, Rome to Venice by train. Depart to USA. Gmut will be our car rental people.(still not sure about drive or train from Nice to Florence)
Is it better to purchase train passes or tickets for specific destination prior to leaving. We purchased Amsterdam to Munich last year while in Amsterdam and it cost as much as the select pass for three conturies that RS talks about. Any insight would be greatly appreaciated..

Advance purchases through the local train web sites allow you to take advance of the discounted ticket but may lock you into non-refundable schedules. Using a travel agency such as Rail Europe on the US side will be more expensive because of the ticket mark up, limited seats available, and service fees so either buy in Europe or through the train site. Italy is fairly cheap to start, difficult to buy through Trenitalian, so buying once in Italy probably is best and you can still catch a discount if available. Most train passes are not a great deal unless you are doing a lot of long distance travel.
