Will be staying in Castellina in Chianti for a week and would like to consider going to Florence for a day. Will have car but don't want to drive into Florence. What is the best way to get there and where do you buy a ticket? I would consider either a bus or train, whichever envolves the less total time traveling. Don't want to buy ticket ahead of time but would like to wait and see what the weather is going to be prior to deciding on the day.
Any help would be appreciated.
If you have a car why can't you drive to Florence? You don't need to battle with city traffic or ZTL. Just drive to Piazzale Michelangelo, a very easy drive from where you are coming from. Parking is free and very safe. After visiting the nearby church of San Miniato, the prettiest in Florence, and after looking at the panorama of Florence from the Piazzale and taking some photos, you can walk down to the center (20-25 min). Alternatively you can go down by taxi or with the very popular no. 12 or 13 bus ride (tourists' most popular bus ride). If you don't feel like walking uphill to your car at the end of your day, a taxi won't be more than 15 euros. The bus is only 1.20 euro per person. Plot the itinerary on google maps. You hardly get inside Florence. Take a GPS if you rent a car.
