PSA: check rental car interiors before driving off!

Up until a few days ago, it had never occurred to me to check the condition of a rental car’s interior before leaving the lot; I’m always focused on dents, scratches, windshield cracks etc.

The other day I picked up a Hertz car that had a whitish residue on part of the dash. I didn’t think too much of it at the time, but it soon became apparent that the stuff (a) was way more widespread than I originally thought and (b) was

vomit.

Someone had barfed all over the dash, console, and surrounding areas, and only made a half-hearted attempt to clean it up. I used some paper towels and spray cleaner to make the smell semi-tolerable; it would have made the most sense to switch cars, but why would Hertz believe me if I told them a previous renter - and not I - was responsible for parking a custard in there?

I returned the car yesterday and haven’t seen any extra charges yet, so no harm no foul. But from now on I will be closely inspecting rental cars for interior filth as well as exterior damage.

OH. MY. WORD!!!!

Yes, I am very glad I'm finished with breakfast. What an awful, disgusting mess.

And no, I would not have thought to look (or sniff) at the interior either.

That's a very good point. I wouldn't think to check much of the interior. Maybe where I'm sitting, but I probably wouldn't pay much attention to the back seats, so definitely something to think about!

I had a rental in Washington DC for a couple of days and did not open the trunk until I turned the car back in, and there was a very nice winter jacket in the trunk -- I didn't have a chance to see if it fit me. Ha.

We rented a car in Croatia last October and the door next to back seat on the passenger side did not open.
It was annoying as there were 4 of us at different times. By the time we realized it we already had the car for 3 days.
We didn’t mention it when we turned it and and we never heard from them. Next time we will check every inch of the car.

Many years ago I rented an Avis car for a few days at the Indianapolis Airport. Every so often I thought I could smell a hint of beer, but didn't think a lot about it. Upon return to the airport, when on the ramp off the highway, I heard some rattling. Sure enough, there were empty beer cans under the driver's seat.

Obviously, the car wasn't really cleaned before my rental. Thank goodness I wasn't pulled over. The Avis manager apologized and didn't bill my company for the rental.

Hertz accused me of taking a headrest from the back seat. Yeah right. I figured someone had a car seat and took it out, or one of their people forgot to put it back. I didn't even use or see the backseat!

I beat the charge. However, I now take pictures of the interior, all the head rests and anything else that could go missing or damaged. I even video the underneath of the car by putting my iphone on a selfie stick as well as the exterior.

Thank you for posting your experience because in today's world who knows what they will come after you for.

Years ago we rented a car through Sears in Honolulu.
Opening the trunk the next day we discovered a large colony of cockroaches.
Months later, a collection agency tried to come after me even though we had paid in full at the time.

I’m glad you were able to make the best of a (very) bad situation. Clearly Hertz didn’t have a process that would’ve followed your advice in the title of this thread! If there was a less-than-tolerable smell when the car was turned in by the previous renter, I’d have thought the crew at a hertz would’ve noticed it and remedied the situation before foisting it on you.

Back in November, we rented a car in Italy from a small, second (or maybe third) rate company. We had to wait for an hour after they explained that they needed to clean the upholstery, after the previous renter had left it excessively dirty. When they brought the car around for us to drive off, the cloth back seat was wet…soggy.

I wonder if they charged the previous renter for the extra cleaning time and effort? Our pick-up time was noon. Hadn’t they had time that morning (or a on prior day?) to clean whatever needed cleaning? At least they noticed it before we were presented the car.

As an aside, there are now lots of insurance options for renting a vehicle, with more and more deductibles and disclaimers. I wonder what is the puke premium?
