Problems getting refund from Railway Ninja?

For our Scandinavian trip, I bought eight first-class train tickets from Stockholm to Oslo through Railway Ninja. Our 2PM ride on July 1st was cancelled by Railway Ninja on June 26th, with no opportunity to rebook (too close to travel date?) so I had to rebook myself on the newly rescheduled Stockholm-Oslo ride (now about 8AM).
Now, despite four separate request for my refund (one reply: "We will send your refund when the rail system refunds us.") I have yet to get paid back ($978, this is real money!) It is seven weeks since the cancellation and six since the travel date- am I getting scammed? Has anyone else had any experiences with refunds from Railway Ninja, positive or negative?

Not following --- is railway Ninja a train company operating trains or a travel agency selling tickets. If on a credit card and less than 60 days old, then dispute it on the credit card. Older than 60 days you may have to make a claim of fraud. Maybe tough to prove.

PS -- Goggle is your friend. It is a third party travel agency. That will complicate everything. Don't know how valid this is -----
Rail Ninja is a complete scam. Sep 20, 2022, 3:37 PM. Save. Do not book your train travel through Rail Ninja. They charged us a fee on top. ........... Found this quickly on Trip Advisor. Did you do any prior research? Hop on the credit card angle quickly. This doesn't sound good.

You have been on this site since 2018. Surely you have read how most of us discourage using third party ticket agencies just for this reason.

The train was not cancelled by Rail Ninja, who are a third party reseller with a very poor reputation- see a number of other posts on this forum.
They do not operate any trains.
It was cancelled by the railway company- Swedish Railways.

Yes they will not refund you until SJ refund them.

This is an object lesson in why you should always book direct with the Railway Company of the country you are travelling in.

I'm sorry to hear about your problem. I don't mean to rub salt in the wounds, but if you'd posted about your plans before the trip I could have told you that using Rail ninja is a horrible idea and you should have bought your tickets from www.sj.se and nowhere else. And if you paid 978 dollars for eight tickets they massively overcharged you. Buying the tickets direct from SJ would have cost you around half of that.

Distputing the cost on your card might be a good route, since you've paid for a service you never recieved. But a bit more information might be needed. When you mentioned that you rebooked yourself, did you do that through Rail ninja or direct with SJ?

You need to read Rail Ninja's fine print carefully, but you might be able to claim that you've had a deal with them and that they should refund your money. Contacting a consumer organisation might also be helpful.

Hey, James! I'm sorry to hear about your experience with Rail Ninja. I wasn't familiar with the company, but I did a little reading on them. Many consumers report having difficulty with the company. It also looks like a big chunk of the ticket price is a non-refundable transaction fee. The company's terms and conditions page says 20%, but some consumers report getting less than 60% back on a refund on some review sites. So, the company may try to give you less than $978 as a refund.

As for charge backs, banks are required to process charge backs within 60 days of the purchase date. They are not prohibited from doing it after 60 days, but they are not required to do it, so many do not. Some banks, though, will still consider a charge back after 60 days. so it may be worth a try even if more than 60 days have passed from the time of purchase.

Good luck! And thanks for sharing your experience.

I successfully received a refund from my credit card company for a fully refundable ticket that an international airline refused to provide. The airline appealed the decision and wanted to give me an eCredit. The credit card company called me with their offer. Both I and the agent quietly thought that was laughable. Anything is possible…wishing you success. Hopefully the fact that that company may not be able to provide what you may have contracted for might provide some relief - depends on the contract terms.

Regardless of the problems you are having getting a refund, Rail Ninjas is just a terrible, terrible place to get your tickets. Their pricing is exorbitant.

Case in point, I looked up their price for a one-way ticket for one person on an ICE (527) from Frankfurt to Munich at 8:53 on Sept 11, 2023. Bahn will sell advance purchase ticket for 43,90€ ($48.08 @ today exch. rate). That's a completely non-refundable, train specific (Super Saver) ticket. For 7 more euro, 50,90 ($55.75), the Bahn sells a train specific, Saver Ticket. Those tickets can be cancelled or exchanged up to the day before travel for a fee with which you get a voucher toward a rebooking.

Rail Ninja has two offerings for the same train, advance purchase. For $139 you can get a completely non-refundable ticket (like the one the Bahn sells for $48). Oh, they do include a seat reservation worth about $5.

The Bahn also sells two varieties of non-Saver, standard fare tickets. The first one, a Flexipreis ticket, can be cancelled free before the first day of validity and is valid on any train of the class specified (ICE or IC/EC) that day, and a "City ticket" valid for use on the starting or destination city's transport to get to and from the train. The Bahn sells that ticket for 124,70€ ($136.58).

A flexi-plus ticket is cancellable for free until the end of the period of validity and includes a city-ticket and seat reservation. It's valid on any train over a four day period. The Bahn sells that ticket for 144,60€ ($158.38)

Rail Ninjas equivalent ticket has a 60% cancellation fee + the $18 service fee in non-refundable. They include a reservation, but they say that the reservation is for a specific train and seats. I'm not sure if the ticket itself is for any train or only a specific one. Their price for that "regular" ticket is $177.

I also looked up the cost to get to Salzburg and back for a day. With the Bahn, four people could do this for 54€ (59.15) with a 4 person Bayern-Ticket. The Bayern-Ticket is valid on any regional train all day long (after 9am workdays).

Rail Ninja only sells tickets for "High Speed trains" (ICE/IC/EC). Those trains, although a little nicer than the regional trains are only marginally faster on this trip. The only RT tickets that Rail Ninja sells for Munich to Salzburg would cost $606 for the Munich to Salzburg round trip.

RailNinja are scammers. Period.

I am hoping someone takes them to court and they get shut down and thrown in prison. They prey on people unfamiliar with the European railways system and fleece them, as you have found out.

Until then. Do not talk to them anymore. Just contest your charge with your CC card company. If enough people do that they might lose their contract with their Card provider, and that would certainly hurt.

Rail Ninja is a Scam. Book direct. Rail Ninja looks like it’s a legit direct sight when googling trains from Vienna to Prague, but it’s not. I paid over $150 more a seat than if I booked directly. The ticket for 1st class runs about $100. The ticket I have had incomplete information and wasn’t updated.

Rail Ninja is a scam. But often people also have the wrong expectations. Why would you expect your ticket to be updated for example?

The OP has never updated the forum as to whether or not a refund was ultimately received.

Well, if people would spend five minutes doing research before they gave away their money, the scammers wouldn’t be in business but instead they just suspend belief when they get on the Internet, because everyone on the Internet is trustworthy

I doubt that he ever received a refund. Also, I imagine that he didn't like the feedback on this thread because that is not what he wanted to hear.
