private transportation and costs

We are 5 women from the states starting out in Venice. We will be in Italy for 3 weeks and are headed down to tuscany. Unless we get a very big car there is not enough room for all our luggage. How would we go about hiring a private driver and then renting a car at our destination?

There may be some rental cars that are large enough for five people and all of your luggage but, I don't know how much luggage you are talking about. At minimum, I fear that you will need a larger vehicle and a private ride from Venice to Tuscany will not be cheap. Also, if you are intending to rent a car, most are stick-shift and not automatic so one of you will need to know how to drive a stick-shift. Also, the driver will need to have an International Driver's License in Italy. You can get them at any AAA office for about $15.

If you're just going from Venice to a destination in Tuscany where you will be housed, then take the train. Once there, rent a larger car for daytrips. You can rent vans with enough advance reservation, but keep in mind they might be harder to drive on narrow rural roads and especially in towns and cities.

I have driven a larger van (8 or 9 passenger) all around southern France and it can be difficult in the villages and narrow roads. I have driven many times in Europe so felt up to the task, but ours was definitely a stick shift. Good idea to just get a larger car at your destination if you will not be moving around. Without all your stuff you should be able to fit 5 in a larger car. They will also rent automatics, if available, they just cost more so I never get one. I prefer a stick anyway. Have a great trip.
