We will be ending a CroisiEurope Danube cruise this June in Passau. I am having trouble finding a rental car to fit our group of 6. All rental cars in Passau are topping out at 5 passengers. We need a car for about 4 days of exploration - Altaussee salt mine, Salzburg, an overnight in an Alpen castle (Schloss Matzen), Neuschwanstein, and then drop off in Munich. We are very comfortable with train travel in Europe, but given the variety of places we are hitting, a car is the way to go for this portion of the trip. Once we drop the car in Munich, we will use Munich as a homebase for a few more days (and utilize trains as needed). I have currently found (and reserved) a rental out of Salzburg, but due to the change in country, there is a high fee for this one-way rental. This reservation is fully cancellable. Just yesterday I found an available van (Hertz) in Waldkraiburg, Germany. This rental is $400 cheaper than the Salzburg rental, even though it is for an extra day (due largely to not needing to pay the country change one-way fee). My issue now is finding a transfer from Passau to Waldkraiburg (107 kilometers/66 miles). I have reached out DayTrip, but they do not offer a transfer between these two places. Does anyone have experience with a transfer service out of Passau?
Heather,
We took a cruise, which ended in Passau, in 2018. 6 of us transferred to Munich via a van, but unfortunately I do not remember the name. I’m pretty sure the cruise company arranged the transfer for us, so I would suggest contacting them to see if they have contact information for that company.
Have a great trip! We loved the Danube.
Vanessa
You can actually get to Waldkraiburg by train. So send someone to pick up the car, drive back to Passau and pick up the rest of the party.
But June is far away. Do not exclude the possibility that you will find what you want in Passau eventually. You do need a van indeed. A normal car is not even suitable for 5 passengers. And don't forget about luggage...
How about renting in Salzburg, and returning it there, and taking a train to Munich?
I understand your problem. I can offer the option of ordering a transfer in advance on the website. You will immediately see the cost and understand if it is convenient for you. I used AtoB Transfer and I liked it very much.
